Well surgery is over and Anya is doing OK. She went in to the OR last night about 5:15 ,made it to the recovery room at 8:15, then back to her room at 9:30. Her lips are very sore and swollen so we are keeping the ice and chap stick flowing with a little Demerol thrown in for good measure.
She had four surgeons with her yesterday, Dr William Magee III is her primary surgeon: (http://www.hopeforkids.com/site/c.lpISKYOvFkG/b.4204757/k.A9F0/Our_Doctors.htm ...you need to scroll down a couple doctors to see him),
Dr William Magee II is his father and the founder of Operation smile ( http://www.operationsmile.org/about_us/leadership/founders.html )
Then he had another partner and a resident with him too. Anya was in great hands but they all agreed that her palate is a difficult and complex thing. They opted NOT to do the bone graft at this time, instead trying one more time to close the soft tissue fistula (hole) that she has in the front of her palate. They did put a new material over the whole surgical site called Alloderm that is suppose to provide a better structure for new tissue growth and healing. We are praying that this will be the extra piece that we need for her palate to finally stay together. They did the very best that they could and now we wait and pray for complete healing.
I must get back to Anya now..her movie is over and I am having trouble typing and rubbing her back at the same time :)
